Working in heights

7. Octobre 09/Interview/ Climbing as a choice subject

Miriam is one of the Performers House-students who has been seen walking on the walls of the school building – outside walls that is – even with her feet up and head down.

Why did you choose climbing as your choice subject?

“The teachers recommended all students from the circus-line to join, because the combination of climbing and doing acrobatics is obviously relevant for us. I would have chosen it anyway, especially because of the remedies it gives us, so that we can go climbing ourselves without help from the teachers and also because it gives you an opportunity to get outside the school and see and do something else. And finally, climbing is good for your body and mind and health in general.”

How is the team?

“The subject is very much based on, and relies on, the trust between the students in the group.  It's about collaborating within the team, making sure that those who are on the ground, secures the one that's in the air. Sometimes it is a challenge for some to find the courage, but everyone is very supportive and encouraging, which makes it a great team.”

Are you sometimes afraid of going?

“The teacher is very good and professional and that combined with the trust between the students takes away any fear. Our teacher is very thorough and secures you about both the equipments and also mentally. She always keeps calm – last class one of the girls panicked a bit while being in the air, and she guided her very well and safe down to the ground again. It's all about safety, safety, safety ...”

How does it feel, being in the air?

“It's not the feeling of ultimate freedom because of the equipment, but close, combined with the feeling of flying. I feel weightless, which makes sense for me, as I'm an air acrobatic, so I'm always working in heights. It's a combination between this and the danger of being up there, while trying to control the element of gravity.”

… and then when you're back on the ground?

“I feel successful and safe, and with a very strong urge to go again and again :-)”

Your best climbing experience?

“Last class we climbed on the Performers House building, which was really nice and good material for a performance of air-acrobatics – but the best experience must be the Sunday afternoon where four of us went out on our own, climbing in trees with the equipment, so that we could get really high up. We went all the way to the top where we stuck our heads out and from there we watched the sunset. The safety and the trust between us combined with the really nice view made it a very special experience.”

“Climbing is the best choice subject... ever!”
