Constant hunger and towel-theft

10. August 09/ Diary of Weeks 35-36 2009

Shit! I forgot my towel! Panic. And every store is closed on Sundays in Denmark, which is quite stupid actually. And my schedule is probably not going to leave any time for shopping and I am not gonna get a towel and I am not gonna get a shower and I am not gonna get any friends and I’ll get known as “smellygirl” – OH great!

I am happy to report, that my prediction didn’t come true. In fact these Performers House people turned out to be quite nice and happily let me steal a few towels from the school’s depot (which I still have to give back by the way – not the depot, the towels…)

I have taken the task of writing a diary of these first two weeks, but firstly let me make it clear: Two weeks in Performers House time feel like at least a month. Not because it has been extremely oh-my-god-this-takes-forever-boring. It has been more like the opposite really. Every day has felt like two, as it has been so action packed. This is why I would like to focus mostly on the beginning.

The minute you enter this school you are instantly consumed by a whole new world. Or at least that was my experience.  Although, and I hate to say this, I felt quite nervous before going. And I thought:  “This is stupid. You have absolutely no reason to feel nervous. You are 20 years old. You have started a new school before. Made friends with complete strangers before. Seriously!”

Still I felt an urge to turn left when passing the junction on the highway towards Germany and maybe go for an unplanned impulsive roadtrip through Europe with my friend, who accompained me on the trip from Funen to Silkeborg.

I am happy (once again) that I didn’t follow my first instinct, because then I wouldn’t have had the pleasure of participating in Jeppe, the music teacher’s, barrel stomp on the first night. I wouldn’t have had the egoboosting experience of beating two guys in fussball as single girl, I wouldn’t have made a fool of myself on stage, but discovering how that meant nothing, I wouldn’t have had the strange experience of being constantly hungry in spite of the very delicious food and feeling very tired, but never wanting to go to bed. I wouldn’t have learned the very important lesson of collaboration while transforming an idea into action, when 25 girls in one room have gotten the task of making a tribute to the boys for the introweek’s fantastic-celeb-party. And yes, I wouldn’t have gone to the fantastic-celeb-party and met Spice Girls, Harry Potter, Nik & Jay and Lars Ilum (in the shape of Sejr). And finally I wouldn’t have met all the fantastic and talented people of Performer’s House.

Within a few days a certain atmosphere infiltrated the school. Everywhere you would (and still will) find an eager talent at the piano or unstoppable musicians jamming and composing in the music room. You would often find an eager dancer in the dancestudio and hardworking and never tiresome circus people practising tricks in the front yard.  As the intro week went by and the first real basic week started, the theatre line got busy as well as we were to prepare impro-sketches for class.

Little by little we have entered the “daily life” of Performers House, which means I have to go now and prepare warm-up for our student-to-student transit on Friday.
