Out of my head

7. Octobre 09/ Diary of Week 39 2009

Oh my God, my group - African Footprint - is going back to Ghana, and I am staying behind!

Hmm, once again I forgot my bed sheet! What am I going to do, who am going to ask for a bed sheet at this time of night? It is 01.30 at night and I walk through the first and the second floor looking for one, and at the end I finally find one in the washing room without asking anyone.

A few days ago Jeppe announced that anybody who uses the schools bed sheets should see Mette at the office. When I remembered that, I was so ashamed of having just taken one myself. But in fact Performers House people are so kind. If this was in Ghana you wouldn’t take it so easily.

I have the task to write the Week 39 diary, but first let me make it clear: In my life I haven’t written a diary down before. I keep everything in my head, not in writing. But that’s all the same – it is a challenge to me.

Actually I arrived on Monday one week earlier at midnight. Tuesday morning Karin was the first teacher I met. In her lesson she introduced me to the other students while we were having a walk in the forest. I was really happy to be part of a group of people from different cultures.

During the first two weeks I had the image of myself being alone, and it made me feel strange. I am happy that the image was not true and that I was able to participate in the first cafe night where I found, that my happiness came back.

Monday night the Danish students Naja and Sasja are doing a Danish class for us foreign students. I don’t know how to explain these two people; They are social, mindful, patient etc. I really enjoy those classes because we learn and have fun at the same time. You can imagine how we prenounce some of the Danish words with the vocals æ, ø, å and simple words like æg, ønske, åben etc. Because of their patience we are able to learn words, adjectives and the uncertain article in Danish language “en” and “et” which we use to form sentences. I really like it.

Every Tuesday we have “Awaking” with Magnus. He is very focused on physical work; maybe because he did a physical kind of theatre. He makes us run a lot. It helps me to prepare my mind for the day. We learn a new game called “zip, zap, boing”. I found this game fun and was laughing a lot at some of the other students and at myself as well.

Our teacher of my Main Subject – Dance – decided that instead of rehearsing in the dance studio we will go to a sports centre every Wednesday to dance in front of mirrors. This is to see ourselves, and I think that was a brilliant idea. I saw that it helps me lot for, because I like dancing in front of the mirror.

Philosophy was cancelled. People were doing different things instead – some were playing piano and singing, some were doing Idea into Action and the dance studio was full of people rehearsing their solo including myself. The computer room is busy too, people are chatting, looking at dance videos on YouTube, talking to friends and family.

Now it is dinner time, the food was delicious. It was lamb stew. Can you imagine how the lamb feet looked like a baby cat on the plate. In fact Africans like to have meat bones in the soup bowl but not on the plate, at least the bone on my plate was way too big! We also got served this strange type of rice, which I have never seen before called couscous. But I will say that it is my favourite kind of “rice” now.

In Idea into Action we have a task every week, and Week 39 the task was to create a game, and supposed to perform it for both students and the teachers. We only have four days to create and perform with costume and light.
We were divided into eight groups and I particularly liked the game of the eighth group very much because it made you speak, compose and perform without preparation. It was called treasure hunt.

The second café night started at 8 PM and it was opened by Anne Marie and Marie. We settled down at some tables with paper and pencils and were told to draw while everything was taking place. When Lena was doing her song I was really moved by it – although it was in Danish. People composed their own songs and performed them, this was very impressing.

After all the concerts people were dancing and drinking and enjoying themselves.

I wish I could tell you more, but I think this is getting long enough for now – I will get back another time.
